the European Specimen Fishing Centre, Fishabil, was created in 1989 by Raphaël Faraggi. Today, this is the foremost Fishing Centre of the world in terms of visitors, quality and size of the stock and the importance of the infrastructures. The record is a Mirror Carp of 34kg (almost 75lbs) and to be noted is the presence of a huge catfish of 111kg (244lbs 11oz).
after 2 years of work and a colossal investment, never before seen in the industry at the time, this lake was created in 1989. The works consisted of a 2km re-routing of a river, the construction of an accommodation complex, redoubling the lake’s surface, restocking with 50 tonnes of record-sized fish and a lorry-full of 6 tonnes extra every year for 23 years, design and re-profiling of the lake and the planting of 700 trees, plus more.
fishing for the average weights is easy enough, more difficult for the larger ones who are cunning; for those with the know-how, it’s possible to catch dozens of carp of over 30-40lbs with the promise of a larger catch. If you don’t get the best daily catch, someone nearby will! The amount of bait is essential for success here, given the population density of fish and the size of the lake.

this gravel quarry, curiously nicknamed the ‘Isles Cubed’ (Isles3) comprises 3 islands over 25 hectares (almost 62 acres) of water, formerly named ‘The Three Islands’ and previously, ‘Domaine of the 5 Lakes’, was dug out in the 1970s. It forms part of a group of connected water features and has links with the river Seine.
for more than 20 years, these lakes have formed a dead channel of the Seine in a naturally abundant habitat. A population of wild carp have settled in these gravel quarries along with a majority of common carp. Since exploitation of the quarry ceased, nature has reclaimed her rights and the parcels have been dyked to create 6 distinct, wild and separate water features.
around 800 carp were introduced, into an existing stock of around 2-300, in 2006. There are neither catfish nor sturgeon. Record catches; a Mirror Carp of 34kg (74lbs 15oz) and a Common Carp of 33kg (72lbs 12oz).

Beaurepaire has been a well kept secret by many who have fished it. It’s a beautiful natural gravel pit, just 2½ hours from Calais that holds a good stock of carp.
The open grassy banks are sloping and steep in places but at summer water levels this poses no problem at all. The Point area that comes out in to the lake is flat enough for a group of anglers to bivvy up on, giving access to virtually the whole lake and allowing for a great social.
Throughout the year the lake can change in depth quite dramatically as it’s fed directly by the water table. The nearby River Aisne often floods in the winter months and while it never floods into the lake it does raise the water table considerably, sometimes by as much as 3 metres.
There may be some original unknown carp which were stocked by the gravel company and we certainly know that in ’03 & ’04 the owner stocked a large number of mirror and grass carp, including 3 x 30’s, 100 x 20’s and 160 doubles. Over the years since then further smaller stockings were also added. We reckon around 350 were stocked.
The carp have benefited from the rich food resources naturally held in the lake and in addition have been fed on maize and pellets through the winter months – so weight gains have been significant. To give some variety around 30 catfish were stocked in ’06 and these are now making regular appearances on the bank with plenty between 50 and 80lb+.
The original cabin has mains electric, UK charging facilities, water. It also provides a basic kitchen with two fridges, small chest freezer, microwave oven & two ring electric hob. In 2012 an additional cabin was added. It’s kept relatively empty, housing just a table and chairs, and is mainly intended for anglers who want to escape bad weather… you’re welcome to sleep in there.
